The short answer

ZoopCoder installs a Discourse community forum on your own Ubuntu server for a fixed ₹5,499, ready in 2-3 working days. The price covers the official Docker-based Discourse install on a server in your name, your domain with SSL, outgoing email connected through your own mail provider, the admin account, up to 5 categories, your logo and colours, a test user and test topic, and daily backups with one tested restore. Discourse supports only its own Docker-based install, and it needs working email before the first admin account can be confirmed, which is where most do-it-yourself installs get stuck. The server, domain and mail provider are paid for separately.

What you get

  • The official Discourse Docker install on your Ubuntu VPS, on the current stable release, with Docker and the server prepared for it
  • Your domain or subdomain pointed to the forum with free SSL that renews itself, and HTTPS enforced
  • Outgoing email connected through a mail provider you choose (we can advise), with SPF and DKIM records added where your DNS allows, and a test message delivered
  • Your admin account confirmed, then the setup wizard completed with your forum name, description, language and India time zone
  • Up to 5 categories created with the permissions you ask for, and the default welcome topics edited or removed
  • Your logo, favicon and colours applied on the default theme
  • A test member and a test topic to check that sign-up, posting and notification emails work
  • Daily automatic backups to a location you choose, and one test restore so you know the backup works
  • A short written guide to updating Discourse and 14 days of fixes for anything we configured

About this service

Discourse is the open-source forum software used for product communities, customer support forums and course groups, and because you host it yourself there is no per-member fee. It is more demanding to install than a blog: it runs only through its own Docker setup, it wants a server with a couple of gigabytes of RAM, and it cannot finish setup without working outgoing email, because the first admin account is confirmed by an email link. That email step, plus SSL and backups, is where most self-installs stall. We handle all of it, prove that a real email lands in an inbox, and restore a backup once before handover. Single sign-on, plugins and moving an old forum are bigger jobs and are quoted separately. For a customer-chat tool instead of a forum see Chatwoot Installation, and for the server itself see VPS Server Setup.

Questions before you buy

Is Discourse free?

The Discourse software is free and open source. You pay for the VPS, the domain, a mail provider if you exceed its free tier, and backup storage. Discourse also sells hosting, which this service does not use; here we install it on a server you own.

What server do I need?

An Ubuntu server with root access and about 2 GB of RAM plus swap at the least; more for a busy forum. We tell you which plan to buy before you pay for one.

Why is email such a big deal?

Discourse confirms the first admin account and sends notifications by email, so setup cannot finish without it. We connect a mail provider and check that a real message arrives before moving on.

Can you connect it to my website login?

Not in this service. Single sign-on with your website or app is a custom job and is quoted separately.

Can you move my old forum into it?

Not in this service. Importing members and topics from another forum is quoted separately.

Who owns the server and data?

You do. The server and domain are bought in your name and we only use the access you give us. You can remove our access once the 14 days of fixes are over.
