  3. Guests and backups provenWe create your guests, run a real backup restore, then send the guide. You get 14 days of fixes.

The short answer

ZoopCoder installs and configures Proxmox VE, the open-source virtualization platform, on one server of yours for a fixed ₹5,499, ready in 2 working days. The price covers the install with the right disk layout for your hardware, a network bridge, the firewall, a trusted SSL certificate for the web console, 2-step login on the admin account, up to 3 virtual machines or containers created from the images you choose, a scheduled backup with one tested restore, and 14 days of fixes. One honest rule shapes the storage choice: the Proxmox installation guide warns that ZFS on top of any hardware RAID is not supported and can lose data, so on a server with a hardware RAID card we use ext4 or XFS on the RAID volume, and on a server with plain disks we offer ZFS, and we confirm which with you before the disks are wiped. The server itself and any licences are billed separately.

What you get

  • Proxmox VE installed on one server, either from the installer image through your host’s remote console or on top of Debian where your provider only offers that, and we say which before the disks are wiped
  • The disk layout chosen with you for your hardware: ext4 or XFS on LVM, or ZFS software RAID on plain disks, and never ZFS on top of a hardware RAID card
  • The network set up with a bridge so your virtual machines get addresses, and the extra IP addresses from your provider mapped if you have them
  • The Proxmox firewall switched on with the web console limited to the addresses you name, root SSH password login switched off and the no-subscription package source set up if you have no paid licence
  • A trusted SSL certificate on the web console through the built-in ACME client if you give a domain, and 2-step login on the admin account
  • Up to 3 virtual machines or LXC containers created from the ISOs or templates you choose, with resources set and start-on-boot turned on
  • A scheduled backup of those guests to storage you choose, with one real restore tested into a new guest
  • A short written guide to creating a guest, taking a snapshot, restoring a backup and updating the host, and 14 days of fixes for anything we configured

What we need from you

  • A server you own or rent with root access and a way for us to boot an installer: a remote console, IPMI or the provider’s rescue mode, or a provider that offers Debian
  • The server’s make and disk setup, and whether it has a hardware RAID card
  • The guests you want, such as an Ubuntu VM or a Windows ISO you are licensed for, and how much CPU, RAM and disk each should get
  • A domain for the console if you want a trusted certificate, and a place for backups such as another disk, a NAS or a second server

Not included

  • The server or dedicated-host fee, the domain fee, Proxmox subscription fees if you choose one, and operating-system licences such as Windows, billed by those providers to you
  • Clusters, high availability, Ceph storage or shared storage across several servers — quoted separately
  • Moving existing virtual machines off VMware, Hyper-V or another host — quoted separately
  • GPU or other PCI passthrough, firewall appliances such as pfSense or OPNsense, and Proxmox Backup Server on a second machine
  • Installing and configuring the software inside the guests beyond a basic operating-system install
  • Hardware repair, on-site visits, or recovering data from a crashed server

About this service

Proxmox VE is a free, open-source platform that turns one physical server into many: full virtual machines through KVM and lightweight containers through LXC, all managed from a web console. It is popular with small businesses and developers who rent a dedicated server and want several separate machines on it, such as one for the website, one for a database and one for testing, without paying for several servers. The official documentation lists what it needs: a 64-bit Intel or AMD processor with the virtualization flag turned on in the BIOS, at least 2 GB of memory for the host itself plus whatever the guests use, and about 1 GB more for every terabyte of storage if you use ZFS or Ceph. The installation choice that causes the most damage later is storage. The installer offers ext4, XFS, ZFS and a technology-preview Btrfs, installation wipes the chosen disks, and the guide states that ZFS on top of hardware RAID is not supported and can result in data loss, so the layout has to match the hardware before you click install. Without a paid subscription the host also needs the no-subscription package source, or updates fail. Backups are the other trap: a scheduled backup that has never been restored is only a hope, so we restore one into a new guest. For one app on a plain server see Docker App Deployment, and for a standard single server see VPS Server Setup.

Questions before you buy

Do I need a dedicated server for Proxmox?

Proxmox needs to run on the machine itself and wants hardware virtualization, so it suits a dedicated server or your own hardware. Most ordinary cloud VPS plans do not allow it, or only through nested virtualization that is slow. Tell us your provider and plan and we will say honestly whether it will work.

Can you install it remotely?

Yes, if you can give us a remote console, IPMI or a provider rescue mode to boot the installer, or if your provider offers Debian, on which Proxmox can be installed. We confirm the method before you pay.

Will the disks be wiped?

The installer erases the disks it is pointed at. We confirm the disk plan with you in writing first, and you must copy off anything you need before we start.

ZFS or ext4?

ZFS suits plain disks and gives snapshots and software RAID, but it needs more memory and is not supported on top of a hardware RAID card. On a hardware RAID server we use ext4 or XFS. We recommend one for your machine before installing.

Is Proxmox free?

Yes, the software is free. A paid subscription is optional and gives access to the enterprise update repository and support from Proxmox. Without it we set up the no-subscription repository so updates still work.

Can you build a cluster or move my VMware machines?

Not in this service, which covers one server. Clusters, high availability and migrating machines from another hypervisor are quoted separately.
