The short answer
ZoopCoder installs either Mattermost or Rocket.Chat, your choice, on your own Ubuntu server as a private Slack-style team chat for a fixed ₹2,799, ready in 2-3 working days. The price covers the install on a server in your name, your domain with SSL, outgoing email, one team workspace with up to 5 channels, up to 10 users invited, a login test from the official mobile app, and daily backups with one tested restore. Both products have a free self-hosted edition, but each vendor limits what the free edition includes and changes those limits between releases, so before installing we read the current limits for the edition you would get and tell you what they mean for your team. The server and domain are paid for separately.
What you get
- A production install of the current stable Mattermost or Rocket.Chat release on your Ubuntu VPS, with the version and edition written down for you
- Before installing, a note on the free edition's current limits on users, message history and features, so there are no surprises later
- Your domain or subdomain pointed to it with free SSL that renews itself, and HTTPS enforced
- Outgoing email configured so invitations and password resets are delivered, with a test message sent and received
- One team workspace, up to 5 channels you name, and up to 10 users invited with roles set
- A login from the official Android or iOS app against your server address, tested
- Daily automatic backups of the database and uploaded files to a location you choose, and one test restore so you know the backup works
- A short written guide and 14 days of fixes for anything we configured

About this service
Mattermost and Rocket.Chat are the two most-used open-source alternatives to Slack: channels, direct messages, file sharing and mobile apps, on a server that belongs to you, so there is no per-user monthly bill and your conversations are not on someone else's platform. The part to be careful about is the free edition. Mattermost's free Entry edition limits how much message history users can view from version 11, while its Team Edition does not, and Rocket.Chat's free tiers cap users in different ways; these terms have changed between releases, so we check the current ones for the edition you would run and tell you before installing, rather than after your team has built up months of history. We then install it with SSL, email and a tested backup. If you want a customer-facing inbox rather than an internal team chat, see Chatwoot Installation, and for private file storage see Nextcloud Installation.
Questions before you buy
Which should I choose, Mattermost or Rocket.Chat?
Both give you channels, direct messages, file sharing and mobile apps. They differ mainly in which features each puts in its free edition and in how they scale. Tell us your team size and what you need and we recommend one before you pay.
Is it really free?
Both vendors offer a free self-hosted edition, but each limits what it includes and has changed those limits between releases. You pay for the server and domain, and we tell you the current free-edition limits before installing.
What server do I need?
An Ubuntu server with root access. We recommend at least 4 GB of RAM, and we tell you which plan to buy before you pay for one.
Will mobile notifications work?
The official mobile apps log in to your server, and we test that. Push notifications to the phone depend on the vendor's push service for your edition, so they are not promised in this fixed fee.
Is this the same as your Chatwoot service?
No. Chatwoot is a customer inbox for website and email conversations with your customers. This is an internal chat for your own team.
Who owns the server and the data?
You do. The server and domain are bought in your name and we only use the access you give us. You can remove our access once the 14 days of fixes are over.
